But
one good drink often leads to another and it does not take a large
quantity of alcohol to result in an unexpected hangover the morning
following one too many. So millions of otherwise sober-minded adults
find themselves dealing with the problem after it occurs. A aspirin,
seltzers or other "over-the-counter remedies only deliver little
more than hope and hype to a hangover victim.
Now there is a better
solution:

What is Nopal
(prickly
pear cactus)
It is
ironic that the solution to preventing a hangover, headaches and its
other disagreeable after effects, has been hiding from us in a
remarkable form of cactus plant life, since before alcoholic
beverages were first consumed.
The
revolutionary botanical discovery was extracted, by a French
scientific team, from a plant that thrives in the scorching
temperatures of the world's deserts. The plant, is a member of the
Cactacea (Cactus) family, known as Opuntia ficus indica.
The
active Nopal extract formula is derived from the fruit of the
Prickly Pear Cactus, which has the ability to prevent a hangover.
Some of the names by which the Opuntia is also known are Barbary
Fig, Indian Fig, Nopal or, most commonly, the Prickly Pear.
Since pre-historic times, desert natives in North and South America
have consumed the fruit and pads of this member of the Cactaceae
family.
Spanish explorers carried this and other cacti species to Europe
over two centuries ago and not long after, the Moors introduced the
Opuntia to Africa.
A
Desert Fruit Consumed by Humans and Animals
People in many parts
of the world enjoy eating the prickly pear fruit, and consider it an
important nutritional source. The succulent reaches 15 feet in
height and typically spreads about 10 feet. Its fruit, referred to
as "tunas," are cylindrical-shaped with a red to purplish colour.
Tunas are a food source for certain desert creatures and humans use
it to make jelly, red dye, face cream and to purify water. The pads
are food for a wild boar-like Sonoran animal named the javelina as
well as domesticated herd animals in countries such as Malta.
A
Cactus Plant Endowed With Amazing Survivability
The team biologists
and pharmacologists that developed the extract were fascinated with
Opuntia and its edible fruit. They were intrigued because the cactus
plant grows in some of the hottest, most arid environs on earth. It
requires little water, and is hardy in sub-freezing temperatures as
low as 15° F, and at altitudes as high as 7,500 feet. The scientific
team was convinced that by studying the make-up of a plant form that
possesses the ability to survive normally devastating environmental
conditions, and has the ability to protect itself from insults to
its structural integrity, they could find something very significant
to benefit humans, as well. So they launched a full-scale study of
the plant.
The
Prickly Pear cactus bears amazing fruit.
In their extensive scientific examination of the cactus, the
researchers uncovered an incredible finding. The unique
environmental defence mechanisms of the cactus centered on its
ability to rapidly induce the synthesis of protective heat shock
proteins (HSPs).* Discovered within the past 25 years, and common to
all living organisms, HSPs protect organisms against physical
stress.
In the human body, HSPs play a natural protection and recovery role
against physical stresses and the pain and fatigue they can bring.
HSPs are the vital proteins that help protect cells and enable them
to recover from physical stresses. Approximately 2 hours after
exposure, HSPs are available to help the body respond to chemical
(alcohol), physical (ionizing radiation, pH, osmolarity), biological
(cytokines, infection) or mechanical (articular micro traumas)
aggression toward the organism. Unfortunately during the 2-3 hours
it takes for HSPs to elevate to a therapeutic level, the stress is
wreaking havoc on the body's cellular structures.
Knowing this, the
scientific team believed that the key to preventing pain and fatigue
caused by physical stress was to find a way to increase the body's
natural HSP levels faster, with no physical side effects. They felt
that it was not beyond the realm of reason that an extract of a
plant, that possessed an amazing level of survivability, could
possibly enhance the ability of the human body to accelerate its HSP
synthesis. In this manner, such an extract could protect human
beings against many types of physical aggressions-including
alcohol.
Numerous clinical tests have confirmed that the scientists' theory
was correct!
A cactus extract touted for its ability to
reduce hangover symptoms has been found to reduce the nausea, dry
mouth and loss of appetite associated with overindulgence.
Researcher Jeff Wiese and colleagues at
Tulane University in New Orleans,
Louisiana found that a type of
prickly pear cactus called Opuntia
ficus indica significantly reduces the symptoms of
alcohol-induced
hangovers. Used in dietary supplements
with such names as "Hangover
Prevention Formula," the cactus extract
was tested by the researchers in a randomized, placebo-controlled
trial that provides evidence to support its use for morning-afters.
Multi-causal misery
Hangovers are multi-causal. Alcohol is a
diuretic and therefore has a
dehydrating effect, which causes headaches, dry mouth and lethargy.
Alcohol is also a metabolic poison, and its impact on the stomach
lining probably accounts for the nausea that often accompanies
hangovers.
Hangover symptoms may also be related to
inflammation caused by impurities in alcoholic beverages and
by-products of alcohol metabolism. An inflammatory marker called
C-reactive protein has been found to
become elevated after a bout of heavy drinking. It is thought that
chronically elevated levels of the protein cause some of the
symptoms related to hangovers.
Prickly pear cactus
extract, touted for many health benefits, is thought to fight
inflammation, and besides hangover cures it is also used by some
people to fight diabetes and high cholesterol, as well as to boost
recovery from strenuous exercise.
Bottoms up
To examine the
effectiveness of the extract for reducing hangover symptoms, Wiese
and colleagues randomly assigned 55 adult volunteers aged 21 to 35
years to receive either prickly pear or placebo five hours before
alcohol consumption.
Over four hours of
drinking, volunteers consumed up to 1.75g of alcohol per kilogram of
body weight, a quantity that has produced hangovers in previous
studies.
One hour after their
drinking session, the participants had their blood alcohol levels
measured by the researchers. The following morning, they had their
vital signs measured, and had blood and urine samples taken.
Participants also reported hangover severity based on nine symptoms
and overall well-being based on a scale from zero to six, with six
points indicating the worst well-being.
Anti-inflammatory
The researchers found
that three of the nine symptoms of hangover—nausea, dry mouth, and
loss of appetite—were significantly reduced after taking the
extract.
The average score for
well-being the next morning was 2.75 for volunteers who took the
extract and 3.10 for volunteers who took placebo.
The researchers also
found that levels of C-reactive protein were strongly associated
with hangover severity, and that C-reactive protein levels were 40%
higher in volunteers who took the placebo compared with those that
took the extract.
